What began as an Eagle Scouts project is now expanding into a school wide garden program at Templeton Elementary.
With the assistance of many volunteers from The Tigard Christian Church, Templeton's very own garden committee, and many other volunteers, we are creating and utilizing multiple gardening spaces for all grade levels.
Vision
We envision a beautiful and productive learning school garden that actively engages all members of the school community, in hands on experiential learning, while encouraging the healthy development of the whole child.
Mission Statement
Our mission is to create a beautiful school garden that nurtures community spirit, among students, school staff, families, and local businesses and organizations. We want to cultivate children's joy in learning
by providing opportunities for hands-on learning in multiple subjects, while helping them develop life long healthy habits and an appreciation for nature and their role in preserving it.
Rationale
We believe that students learn better when they are actively engaged in their learning. The garden will provide opportunities for standards based interdisciplinary lessons. It will also teach patience and responsibility. Working in
the school garden will promote good nutrition and exercise. It will also address multiple learning styles. The way our school gardens are being set up, we believe it will build classroom relationships, improve teamwork, and strengthen school spirit. Last but not least our garden will make our school a beautiful and healthy place.
